Preparing for your first supervised visit
First visits carry a lot of nerves — for parents more than kids, usually. Here's how to walk in prepared, calm, and focused on the only thing that matters: good time with your child.
Before the visit
- Reread your order. Know your own restrictions cold — topics that are off-limits, gifts, photos, other people attending. Your supervisor enforces the order; knowing it means no surprises.
- Confirm logistics the day before. Location, time, and what happens if someone runs late.
- Plan the time, loosely. An activity your child already loves beats an elaborate outing. Familiar wins over impressive.
What to bring
- A snack or drink your child likes (check the order and any allergy notes)
- One or two familiar activities — a card game, a ball, a favorite book
- Weather-appropriate everything; visits often happen outdoors
- Not much else — the simpler the visit, the more natural it feels
During the visit
Let the supervisor fade into the background — the best visits are ones where everyone forgets the supervision is happening. Keep conversation in the present: school, friends, games, the squirrel stealing your picnic. Court matters, the other parent, and "when this is all over" talk are off-limits in almost every order, and they put weight on a child that no visit should carry.
If emotions show up
Reunions after a long gap can be emotional, and that's okay. Supervisors have seen it all and will give you room. If your child is shy or slow to warm up, don't force it — parallel play, sitting nearby, and patience almost always win by the end of the first visit.
After the visit
The supervisor writes factual notes — what happened, not opinions. A calm, ordinary visit makes a calm, ordinary report, and a stack of calm, ordinary reports is exactly what moving toward unsupervised time is built on. One visit at a time.
