Monitored custody exchanges: a complete guide

Sometimes the visit is fine — it's the hand-off that goes wrong. Monitored exchanges solve exactly that problem: a neutral professional manages pickup and drop-off so parents never interact and children never watch a confrontation.

How an exchange works, minute by minute

  1. Parent A arrives at the agreed public location at their scheduled time and checks in with the monitor.
  2. Parent A says goodbye and departs. The monitor stays with the child.
  3. Parent B arrives at a staggered time — typically 10–15 minutes later — and takes over.
  4. The monitor logs both ends: times, the child's demeanor, and anything notable.

Total contact between parents: none. Total drama a child witnesses: none. Most exchanges take under half an hour including the buffer.

When courts order monitored exchanges

Exchanges are commonly ordered when there's a no-contact or restraining order between parents, when hand-offs have historically produced conflict, or as a step-down after supervised visitation ends — the parenting time itself is unsupervised, but the transition stays managed. Plenty of families also choose exchanges voluntarily, simply because a neutral witness keeps everyone on best behavior.

What gets documented

Arrival and departure times for each parent, the child's observable condition and demeanor, and any incident either parent asks to have noted. If hand-off disputes ever reach a courtroom — "she was late every week," "he never brings the backpack" — the exchange log settles the question with timestamps instead of memories. See how court documentation works for the bigger picture.

Making exchanges easy on kids

Predictability is the gift here: same place, same routine, same friendly monitor. Pack transitions the same way each time, keep goodbyes short and warm, and let the routine do the emotional work. Children adapt to calm exchanges remarkably fast — often faster than the adults.
