Virtual supervised visitation: a practical guide

Supervised video visits keep parent-child relationships alive across distance, deployment, and relocation — and courts increasingly order them as a first step back toward in-person time. Done well, they're far better than their reputation.

How a virtual visit works

The supervisor sends a video link to both households, joins the call first, and stays on for the full visit. The custodial side needs a device and a quiet spot; the visiting parent needs the same. The supervisor keeps the conversation within the order's rules — gently redirecting if it strays — and documents the visit like any other.

Technology setup that prevents 90% of problems

Keeping young children engaged

A video call is a strange object to a four-year-old. The parents who succeed treat it as an activity, not an interview: reading picture books to the camera, drawing the same picture "together," show-and-tell with toys, silly games like freeze-face. Ten engaged minutes beat forty minutes of "what did you do at school?" — and supervisors will happily suggest activities that fit your child's age.

Start and end times, participants, engagement, and anything notable — the same factual standard as in-person court reports. For a parent working back toward in-person visits, a consistent record of warm, appropriate video calls is genuinely persuasive evidence.
